About The 2Spirit Name

The name was introduced in Manitoba in 1990

The 2Spirit name:

  • Came the year of the Oka Resistance
  • Came after Elijah Harper killed the Meech Lake Accord

The 2Spirit name:

  • Binds Indigenous LGBTQ+ people to the energy and power of the natural and spiritual worlds
  • Binds Indigenous LGBTQ+ people to the spirit of respect, nurturing and love in their families, communities, and nations.

2Spirit people and the TRC

Indian Residential Schools and Days Schools funded by the federal government and run by seven Christian Church denominations sought to impose the colonial binary gender (male - female) identity on Indigenous children and their communities. This attack resulted in the erasure of the 2Spirit cultural history and social roles.

The MMIWG-2SLGBTQQIA+ Action Plan

The MMIWG Inquiry for Murdered and Missing Indigenous Women and Girls broadened its mandate and mission to include 2SLGBTQQIA+ people to align itself with Indigenous values and world views that are inclusive of gender diverse and LGBTQ+ people. A subworking group, in collaboration with the federal government, launched a 2Spirit-specific national action plan in June, 2021.
